Secret #1: My “Lifestyle Audit” Strategy For Ultimate Work/Life Balance

By July 24, 2019The Doing School

Hey Lovely,

If you’re ready to design your own lifestyle business that is built to last…

But are so up to your neck in to-do’s and responsibilities, you have no idea where to start…

Then keep reading.

Because in this blog post, I’m going to reveal to you the Lifestyle Audit that gave me back my sanity, my freedom, and my time…

So even the most time-poor ladies can get Doing as well.

After hitting rock-bottom, and ending up bed-ridden with a chronic disease…

I realised I was working way too hard in all the wrong ways.

I’d created this beast of a business that was automated, and really quite successful…

But because I’d never invested time in making sure I was strong as well…

I came crumbling down 🙁

Sitting in a sterile hospital bed with knee-high compression socks on…

I wished I’d figured this out 9 years earlier.

But I’d been blinded by the busyness.

It’s so much easier to see where someone else is going wrong…

Than it is to see the parts of your life that need work, right?

When I was finally forced to stop hustling and working though…

I gained a whole new perspective on the life I’d built for myself

My health, finances, relationships, marriage, business, my fun-times, my faith, my philanthropy, my hobbies and passions…

I began to break down every responsibility I had to the world around me…

And see what was being neglected.

If you too are a hard-working female entrepreneur juggling a heck of a lot of plates in your life…

It’ll be no surprise to you that my list was pretty darn long!

I’ve got my role as a wife which requires:

Date nights…

And time to talk and connect with my hubby.

It requires being able to sit and think about how I could make his day better…

And being available to listen to him.

It means doing the things that make him happy…

Like creating a warm, calm home…

And always having really good food to enjoy. 😉

So I’m a wife… and I’m also a foster carer.

That means bathing, and feeding, and teaching, and cuddling, and listening, and playing.

As well as trips to Child Protection Services, doctors, birth-families etc.

And then of course, I’m a daughter, sister, and friend…

Which requires time for coffee dates and dinner parties…

Supporting friends through different seasons…

And being a listening ear and loving support.

Then I’m an auntie to 5 nieces and nephews, and 6 God kids all across the country…

So that means travelling, visiting, organising birthday pressies, and Facetimes.

Are you getting the picture?

Alongside all these things, and more…

I’m also a business owner, running a company with 26 staff and 50,000 customers across 72 countries.

Crikey that’s a lot.

I’m guessing right now, you’ve got a similar list of your own responsibilities spinning through your mind…

And I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just as long (if not longer) than mine!

It’s not enough to just have this list of responsibilities in the back of our mind though.

Unless we’re intentional with what we actually do with this list…

It will only weigh us down.

We’ll grow heavier and heavier under the weight of all the responsibilities that – let’s face it – we’re neglecting…

And each new friendship you make will be another brick in the backpack…

Each argument with your partner will draw you down…

Each forgotten birthday, missed Facetime, disappointed text, and lost opportunity to love-on your loved-ones…

They’ll drag you closer and closer to your tipping point.

So, how can we be intentional about getting these things out of our head, and putting them into action?

For me, it started as simply as writing them all down.

This was the first part of my “Lifestyle Audit”… downloading my life onto my trusty whiteboard and going from there.

I find things a lot easier to tackle on paper than in my brain.

Anyone else?

The next step was to restructure and rebuild.

Aka. The ‘Doing’.

This is NOT hustling.

Hustling means putting in the work and sacrificing your sanity now… all in the hope of a better tomorrow.

‘Doing’ is different.

‘Doing’ means taking the right steps in the right order to build yourself, and your business, up to last.

It means guaranteeing a stronger, more sustainable and more scalable future…

Because you’ve intentionally designed it to be that way.

Hustling has always forced me to try and fit my lifestyle into my business…

But this time, I decided to design my business around my life.

But this time, I decided to design my business around my life.

I planned out what my dream week would look like…

I made it a non-negotiable to include time to look after myself…

I scheduled blocks into my week where I Facetimed my family…

And I always made sure I was finished work well before 4pm each day, so I wasn’t rushed when it came to creating a warm and cosy home for the evening.

How would you design your lifestyle?

What kind of ‘luxuries’ do you have in your schedule now, that you’d turn into non-negotiables, like massages, or hot baths with a good book?

The best part of this step is that…

As you design your dream lifestyle…

The logical steps to take, and gaps to fill in order to make your business integrate with your lifestyle become crystal clear.

For me, I obviously needed to…

  • Hire a bigger team to support the day-to-day of the business…
  • Get more automation and systems in place to take over the lingering manual tasks…
  • Find a mentor who is ahead of me in business, to give me experienced advice to help me grow…
  • Plan ahead, so I’m not working to such a tight schedule…

And the list goes on.

See what I mean?

Building a business that lasts starts with building YOURSELF up to last.

And by prioritising your lifestyle freedom, you’ll keep your business working for you, not the other way around.

The final step I needed to take meant actually taking Massive Imperfect Action and getting started…

It meant not just identifying that I had my fingers in way too many pies…

But actually removing my fingers, licking them clean, and not letting myself go back in!

I was able to hire, train, outsource, and automate…

Invest in growing a strong, hard-working team with a Doing culture to take over those low-value tasks I didn’t need to be doing myself.

Bit by bit, I was able to get to the point where I was only doing what ONLY I could do. 🙂

Stick that to your wall, darl!

I only do what only I can do.

It took a little while, but I was able to free myself up to focus in on my Genius Zone and unload the rest.

Over the past 18 months, I’ve been able to cut down my time working in the business from 60+ hours a week…

Down to just 2 days.

Thanks to this somewhat-mandated Lifestyle Audit…

I have time to invest in myself, my health, my marriage, my family…

And my business has still never been healthier, stronger and happier.

It’s become an 8-figure coaching and consulting empire, serving over 50,000 customers in 72 countries all across the world!

It’s the difference intentionally designing a lasting business can make, right?

If you want to experience the same kind of freedom in your lifestyle…

Freedom to do what you want, when you want…

Then a roadmap like this will be your second-most-valuable weapon for achieving that.

Your first most-valuable weapon though…

Well, that will always be accountability.

Having people on your team to cheer you on and draw you up to a higher level of business growth.

With a roadmap, plus accountability, you’ll be unstoppable.
