To grow a profitable lifestyle business, you need to have a personal relationship with tens of thousands of people.
Sounds exhausting, doesn’t it?
Just like your relationships with loved ones, establishing a healthy and mutually beneficial relationship between your business and customers requires work.
But are you aware of how much work it really takes?
Let’s break it down:
Say you have 1 customer in your community.
To make sure that relationship grows and stays strong, they’ll require some sort of email every time:
- They make an enquiry about a product or service
- They buy one of your products
- They’ve attended one of your events
- They subscribe to your website or blog
- You’ve got a new piece of content or product/service to offer
At the very least, that’s 5 personalised emails you will need to draft and send to keep this customer.
And that’s based on them only ever having 1 question or buying 1 product (ideally, you’d like them to continue to buy all your products).
Got 10 customers? That’s 50 individual emails.
50 customers? 250 emails.
100 customers? 500 emails.
1,000 customers? 5,000 emails…
See where I’m going with this?
That right there is a recipe for entrepreneurial groundhog day.
You can understand how easy it is to fall down the well, and just how hard it can be to climb back up.
That’s where automation comes in. An automated system is the rope that’ll pull you out of that entrepreneurial groundhog day hell.
Automation allows you to strategically think about your business, map it out, do it once, and then its DONE.
Automation can take a few different forms. Namely, email marketing tools, auto responders and customer relationship management (CRM) software.
Don’t be fooled. Implementing automation into your business isn’t necessarily easy.
It takes hard work. But the whole point is that the hard work is done once, then never again.
As opposed to manually performing the same tasks over and over again.
I swear by automation. In fact, I wouldn’t have a business without it.
But some remain sceptics.
That’s why I’ve put together a list of the most common misconceptions about automation systems…
And how they’re completely, 100% not true.
You don’t need it
Yes, you do.
If I was your mother, I’d give you a stern talking to and maybe even a slap on the wrist for thinking there’s no need for automation in your business, then send you straight to your room.
Luckily, I’m not your mother.
I am your friend though, and because I care about you and your success, I’ve got to call you out on this whole ‘not needing automation’ BS.
First thing’s first. It’s no longer ok to run a business manually. Why?
a) Your customers a.k.a every single person in your community deserves an exceptional customer experience.
From the moment someone discovers you on Google or Facebook and clicks through to your website, every interaction this person has with your business must be positive and outstanding.
A lot goes into creating a truly exceptional customer experience.
Think intuitive websites and marketing funnels, personalised email nurturing, and valuable content.
Providing an exceptional customer experience takes work.
And if you’re doing all of this manually, it can turn into a huge headache… which brings me to my next point.
b) You’re human.
No matter how hard you try, there are only so many people within your business who you can manually maintain a personal relationship with.
For me, I find I’m able to give maximum 20 people the love and attention they deserve.
That leaves a whole lot of potential and existing customers feeling neglected, ignored or forgotten. Which is very bad for business.
Makes sense, right?
It’s Expensive and Tech-Heavy
That may have been true years ago. All I can say is – thank god for modern technology!
Automation software is made for people like you and me – less computer literate, budget savvy female entrepreneurs.
When it comes to your computer skills, please do not fear implementing automation into your business.
No, you’re not going to have to get someone to do it for you. I won’t let you.
It’s so simple and user-friendly, I want to empower you to do it for yourself. The only thing keeping you stuck under piles of paper is fear, not your tech knowledge.
And while we’re talking about things you think you don’t have, let’s discuss your limited budget.
For some reason, people seem to think spending money on automating their business is the equivalent of running through the street throwing wads of cash.
This is not the case. But you know what is like that?
Hiring staff to keep up with manual tasks such as emailing, invoicing and admin.
A quality and well set up automation system can do the work of multiple staff members.
Staff members, might I add, that do exactly what they’re told, don’t take lunch breaks or check their Facebook while they’re meant to be working…
Know what I’m talking about?
It’s cold and impersonal
For most of us, our business is our baby.
Whether you’re just starting out or have been at it for yonks, there’s no doubt the voice of your business is something you’re passionate about.
I know what you’re thinking…
How can a digital system write better emails than me?
Here’s the thing. An automation system is a Lamborghini.
You are the fuel.
Your Lamborghini can’t drive without being filled up with your personalised engaging content as fuel.
Your CRM program can be as warm and gooey as you want it to be because it’s only a mode of transport.
It’s what you fuel it with that’ll go the extra mile in providing your customers with an exceptional experience.
So, I guess the real question isn’t whether or not automation is impersonal, but…
Does your manual process measure up?
No matter how good your emails are or how lovely and personable you are as the face of your business, inconsistency and forgotten replies will always come across as cold.
Short of reaching through your screen and giving you a good ol’ shake, this slice of reality is the best way I can remove your entrepreneurial groundhog day tinted glasses.
So go on, upgrade that tired shoebox to a Lamborghini and embrace automation.
Your keyboard and sanity will thank you for it.
